Data are available from 1986 to 2035. Historical data (1986-2013) for the entire province and the St. John’s Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) (2001-2013) are the official population estimates from Statistics Canada available at the time of publishing. Historical data for all other years and geographical areas were derived by the Economic Research and Analysis Division. The projection data are produced using POPPS, the Population Projection System, a custom-built projection system which projects the population by age and gender for Newfoundland and Labrador and sub-provincial regions. POPPS is housed at the Economic Research and Analysis Division, Department of Finance. The system uses information/assumptions about fertility, mortality and migration to produce three different population projection scenarios for Newfoundland and Labrador. The medium scenario is considered to be the "most likely" and is integrated with government's economic forecast. The population projections are available by five-year age cohort and gender.
